Three Dimensional TANGOES

Summary/Suggested Uses
This exercise is designed for honors or gifted students at the Jr High level, or high school level in any science course. Use it as an extra credit project, optional activity when work is finished, or for small group think tanks. The time spent will depend entirely upon how you use this exercise.

Objectives
Participation in this exercise will help students to
  1. Practice visual thinking
  2. Increase their understanding of spatial relationships
  3. Practice three dimensional construction
Materials
  1. Three or four sets of TANGOES * pieces per group of 1-3 students
  2. TANGOES * image card for each group.
  3. Colored modeling clay or dough
  4. Styrofoam trays to serve as bases for the models
Directions
  1. Issue one styrofoam tray and one container of modeling dough to each group along with their TANGOES * pieces and an image card.
  2. Explain that today’s challenge is to build the image on their card in three dimensions. The modeling dough is used as mortar to hold pieces in place when necessary. However, each TANGOES * piece should fit as tightly as possible against its neighboring pieces. The dough should not significantly affect the dimensions of the finished image.
  3. Allow students to work independently, offering suggestions in the form of questions to help stimulate thinking, when requested.
Debrief and Transition
When designs are completed, evaluate with students how each meets the criteria of three dimensions (what planes does it contain) and how it relates to real-world construction problems or other science topics. The goal is to have students articulate what they learned through this exercise and to relate that knowledge to real-world situations. (Accept any reasonable answers.)
