Creative Thinking

Summary/Suggested Uses
This is an excellent warm up exercise for any science related class. Tie it in to a unit on inventions, scientific method, or problem solving, using it to create interest and enthusiasm for the day’s work. Allow 10-15 minutes.

Objectives
Participation in this exercise will enable students to
  1. Practice visual thinking
  2. Explore spatial relationships
  3. Identify steps of the scientific method
Materials
  1. Set of TANGOES * pieces for each student
Directions
  1. Issue a set of TANGOES * pieces to each student. Explain that today’s challenge is to fit their pieces together so that they form an image of a known object. Stress that each student should construct an image not being made by any other student, although feedback to your neighbor may be allowed. Thus, no two images will be same.
  2. Allow 15 minutes for students to construct images. Circulate among them to offer feedback and encouragement.
  3. Call time when students appear finished or restless.
Debrief and Transition
"Looking around, I see a lot of really interesting shapes. While you were working, I noticed that several of you seemed to have strategies or certain steps that you were using." (Collect input on how students got to their completed image, were they aware they could use steps? What steps did they go through from start to finish. List the steps of the scientific process on the board and compare the strategies used by students to these steps.)

Transition to regular lesson plan by stating how the creative design process relates to the topic you will be discussing today.
